DHAKA, Jan 23, 2017 (BSS) - The Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) today called on Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) institutions to ensure their capacity building and equity in planning and implementation of climate related projects.
The call came as TIB released a research report on 'Climate Financing and Local Government Institutes: Governance in Project Implementation' at a press conference at its Dhanmondi office.
The study was made in six local government institutions that included municipalities, district councils and city corporations.
The TIB found positive development of some of this projects. These are: unusual steps taken to cope with climate change. These involve climate change sensitive housing and waste management.
Other positive developments were display of information board on the projects, and they were found to be inconsonance with implementation realities.
All projects had their primary information and implementation inspected by local government division.
One project was found to be planned, modified, implemented and monitored by the local people in consultation with the local representatives.
The TIB said there were many challenges to good governance including poor capacity of local government institutions.
Chairperson of TIB Trusty Board Advocate Sultana Kamal chaired the press conference. Executive Director of TIB Dr Iftekharuzzaman, deputy-executive director Professor Dr Shumaiya Khayer and Research and policy department director Mohammad Rafiqul Hassan were present.
