Suspected thief apparently dies after jumping into pond

A suspected thief apparently died after jumping into a pond in Chattogram while he was trying to escape from the Detective Branch (DB) of Chattogram police on Friday morning.

But police claimed that the thief died of a heart attack in his own residence after noticing the law enforcement team. However his body was recovered from the pond later in the morning.

The deceased was identified as Nasir Uddin, 55, son of late Bazal Ahmed, a resident of Pashcim Sahid Nagar area of Bayezid Bostami Thana.

According to district police information, Nasir was accused of cattle theft at Fatikchari Police Station. Another accused who was arrested in this case mentioned Nasir’s name in his confessional statement. Following the statement, the Detective Branch of Chattogram police conducted an operation to arrest him last night.

Abu Taiyab Md. Arif, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Chattogram district special branch and spokesman of Police Super Office, said when the DB team went to Nasir's house, the family members closed the door of the house and gathered hundreds of people, who started throwing stones at police. At the time of the incident, the accused Nasir died of a cardiac accident in his house.

On the other hand, the locals said that when the police tried to break the door of Nasir's house during the operation, Nasir escaped through the window and jumped into the pond.

Ferdous Jahan, Officer in Charge of Bayezid Bostami Police Station, We have not received any complaint from Nasir's family yet. His body was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
