A student and a teacher were killed and several others injured when a truck ploughed through a school in Shivalaya upazila of Manikganj district on Monday.

The deceased were identified as Jarin Tasnim, 7, daughter of Sahidul Islam of Tepra village and a class II student of the school and Fatema Akter, a teacher of the school and wife of Awlad Hossain of Vakla village in Shikshika upazila.

Locals said contractor firm ‘NDE Company’ used to keep the truck on the ground of Abdul Alim Memorial School paying rent to the authorities.

As the driver started the truck to get out of the school around 10:30 am, it ploughed into a group of students on the school ground, leaving Tasnim dead on the spot.

Several others, including teacher Fatema, were seriously injured.

Later they were taken to the Upazila Health Complex where Fatema died while undergoing treatment.

The other teachers including the headmaster of the school managed to flee the scene.

However, the driver was caught by the locals.

Legal action will be taken in this regard, said Mohammad Shahin, officer-in-charge of Shibalaya Police Station.
