Sports journalist Masud Ahmed Rumi’s death anniversary to be observed Friday

The 19th death anniversary of renowned sports journalist, freedom fighter and former president of Bangladesh Sports Journalists Association (BSJA) Masud Ahmed Rumi will be observed on Friday.

Rumi, the most influential sports journalist of his time, passed away on March 11 in 2003 aged 55.

Born on January 1 in 1948 in Naogaon, he started his career as a sports journalist in 1978 with now-defunct Dainik Bangla and worked there until its closure.

Later, he joined Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha in 1997 and served as its sports editor until his death.

The journalist was the BSJA president from 1991-94.

Rumi, a physics student of Dhaka University, also took part in the country’s Liberation War in 1971 and enrolled as an instructor of the Bangladesh Liberation Force.

He was also involved in politics in his student life and elected organising secretary of the central committee of the undivided Chhatra League in the 60s.
