Speaker for unity among commonwealth nations to face global challenges

DHAKA, Dec 15, 2016 (BSS) - Jatiya Sangsad Speaker and Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Chairperson Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has called upon the Commonwealth parliament members to find out common solutions to global challenges through innovative thinking.

She made the call in her presidential speech at the inaugural ceremony of 62nd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in London on Wednesday, said an official release here today.

The speaker said the CPA is a unique platform for inter-parliamentary dialogues.

It has created scopes for strengthening democracy and new innovative thinking in the Commonwealth countries, she added.

Referring to the theme of 62nd Commonwealth Conference is 'A Collaborative Commonwealth: Unity, Diversity and Common Challenges, the CPA chairperson said this theme is time-befitting in the context of the current world.

"There is alternative to unity in facing global challenges," she said.

Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland, CPA Secretary General Akbar Khan and South African MP Lindiwe Maseko also spoke at the inaugural session.

Speakers, MPs and parliament officials from 52 countries are taking part in the 62nd Commonwealth Conference.
