Speakers of a roundtable here on water-logging in Bhabodah area under Jessore district today demanded immediate solution to the problem by adopting short-term, mid-term and long-term projects.
Online news portal Risingbd.com organized the roundtable at its Rajuk Avenue office, participated by cross section of people, government officials, water experts and sufferers of the problem.
Chief Executive of Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) Advocate Syeda Rizwana Hassan moderated the programme where former Chief Engineer of Water Development Board Engineer Sheikh Nurul Alam, General Manager of Bangladesh Bank Provash Chandra Mallick, Director of Relief and Disaster Management Directorate Md Gias Uddin, Director of the Centre for Environmental and Geographic Information Services Dr Subrata Kumar Mondal, Special Correspondent of BSS and Convener of the Coordination Committee for Resolving the Water Logging of Bhabodah in Dhaka Madhusudan Mondal, its Member Secretary Jahidur Rahman Milon and local water expert Md Mahir Uddin spoke.
The speakers demanded immediate declaration of Bhabodah area as 'affected area' and introduction of Tidal River Management (TRM) system in the region.
They also proposed to form a regional authority comprising South-Western region like Barind Multi-Purpose Development Authority (BMDA).
The speakers urged the government to ensure up-stream and down-stream connectivity of all the regional rivers and canals to remove water-logging from the region.
