DHAKA, Jan 3, 2017 (BSS) - The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today upheld High Court orders, granting bail to suspended mayor of Sylhet City Corporation, Ariful Haque Chowdhury and Habiganj Municipal mayor GK Gaus in two separate cases.
A four-member Appellate Division panel headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order this morning.
Earlier on December 20, 2016, the Chamber Judge court of the Appellate Division stayed bail of the two BNP leaders, accepting two separate pleas of the state and sent the matters to full bench for hearing.
The High Court on December 11 granted Ariful six months bail in a case for carrying out bomb attack in Awami League rally in Dirai, Sunamganj on June 21, 2004. One was killed and 29 others were injured in the attack.
Gaus on the other hand, had secured bail on the same day in a case lodged under explosive substance act over carrying out grenade attack in a rally on January 27, 2005, that killed five persons including former Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria.
