DHAKA, Jan 18, 2017 (BSS) - The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today released full text of its verdict that upheld death sentence of three leaders of banned militant outfit Harkat ul-Jihad al-Islami (HuJI) including Mufti Hannan in a case over 2004 grenade attack on the then British envoy Anwar Choudhury.
The apex court released the 65-page text of the verdict and posted it on its website.
The apex court on December 7, 2016, pronounced the judgement, dismissing appeals filed by HuJI Bangladesh wing chief Mufti Abdul Hannan, his cohorts Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul and Delwar Hossain alias Ripon.
Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal on December 23, 2008, sentenced Mufti Hannan, Bipul and Ripon to death in the case. It also sentenced Mohibullah and Abu Jandal to life imprisonment.
The attack took place at the Hazrat Shahjalal Shrine in Sylhet on May 21, 2004, resulting in the deaths of three, injuring around 50 people including the British envoy of Bangladesh origin.
