Several hours after enforcing an indefinite strike, Bangladesh Railway staffers including loco masters withdrew their strike Wednesday afternoon after the Railways Minister assured them of meeting their demand.
The protesters decided to end their strike after assurance from Railways Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan, Shariful Alam, public relations officer of the Railways Ministry, told UNB.
They went on an indefinite strike at 5 am demanding the restoration of the mileage allowance, causing sufferings to commuters.
Md Nurul Islam Sujan discussed the matter with the railway staffers at Kamalapur Rail Station at noon.
“We express solidarity with the staff and a letter was sent to the Finance Ministry for considering their demand. A meeting will be held with the Prime Minister on April 19 where the demand of the railway staff will be placed,” said the minister.
He also urged the staffers to keep the train operation normal.
The strike crippled train services across the country, with passengers on internal routes in different parts being the worst hit.
Mileage allowance is paid according to the number of miles driven for loco masters and other relevant staff.
