Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday alerted the leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) against "opportunists" saying they must not grab the student organization having a long heritage and history of struggle.
"Opportunists in the politics are like cuckoos of spring," he said referring to a Bengali proverb meant for opportunists as he was speaking at the council of BCL Dhaka University residential hall units in front of Aparajeyo Bangla on the campus.
He added: "They (opportunists) turn their coats with the change of state power."
Quader, also the road transport minister and a former BCL president, recalled that on August 15, 1975 the opportunists were prepared to welcome Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the DU campus with wreaths as he was set to join a ceremony there.
But, he said, the opportunists could not be found to wage protests as Bangabandhu was killed on that day along with most of his family members.
"You will never get the opportunists beside you in crisis period," Quader said.
Quader urged the BCL to draw new activists and supports of common people with its good works and organisaitonal activities while sounded a strong of warning simultaneously against any evil doings on the part of anyone involved in BCL.
"Stern action will be taken against those who will be involved with evil activities in the name of BCL," he said. Quader said "academic background, discipline, conduct, merit and efficiency" must be the criteria in selecting leaders adding "sycophancy" would be regarded as disqualification from now on for becoming leaders.
Speaking on the occasion, Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said because of its "wrong politics" now exposed BNP to a state of isolation.
"BNP is now accepting their defeat by calling for establishing level playing field in the Narayanganj City Corporation polls," he added. AL Joint General Secretary Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak, BCL President Saifur Rahman Sohag and General Secretary SM Jakir Hossain also addressed the function.
Earlier, Dhaka University unit of BCL president Abid Al Hasan inaugurated the council while general secretary Motahar Hossain Prince addressed the function as chief discussant.
