Prof Arefin mourns death of sculptor Shamim Sikder

Dhaka University (DU) former Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique today expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Ekushey Padak winning sculptor Shamim Sikder.

In a message of condolence, he said Shamim Sikder’s death created a deep vacuum in the field of education especially in fine arts education.

Prof Arefin, also chairman of the board of directors of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), said Shamim Sikder was a renowned teacher of Fine Arts Faculty of Dhaka University.

The new generation students of fine arts were benefited in different ways from Shamim Sikder’s life and works, he mentioned.

He said ‘Swadhinata Sangram’ sculpture on Dhaka University campus is one of her notable works.

Prof Arefin prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to bereaved family members.

Shamim Sikder passed away while undergoing treatment at United Hospital in the city at the age of around 70.
