President stresses on agricultural research for boosting output

DHAKA, April 6, 2017 (BSS)- President Abdul Hamid today called for putting more emphasis on conducting agricultural research to develop newer varieties of food grains and technologies for ensuring the optimum utilization of limited land for boosting production.

"Bangladesh has attained an unprecedented success in food-grain production because of the incumbent government's agriculture friendly policy," he said in a message on the eve of "Bangabandhu National Agriculture Award-1421 and 1422 (Bengali Year)" giving ceremony.

The President welcomed the initiative of giving the award and also greeted the recipients of the award in recognition of their significant contributions to the field of agriculture.

He expressed his hope the award will encourage and motivate the individuals and organizations in agricultural activities in future.

Abdul Hamid said Bengali culture, customs and heritage are connected with agriculture for long as it is the driving force behind development and economy of Bangladesh.

"Our population is increasing but farmland is decreasing. On the contrary, it is a big challenge to ensure food and nutrition security for the large population," he said.

The President said it is a demand of the time to develop new varieties of food grains and technologies to adapt with the climate change.

He lauded the contribution of farmers, agricultural workers, scientists and other concerned in ensuring supply of nutritious food through modernization of agriculture, increasing of intensiveness of food grains and their diversification by utilizing modern technology.

The President wished all-out success of the award-giving programme.
