DHAKA, Dec 31, 2016 (BSS) - President Abdul Hamid today sought strict Election Commission (EC) restrictions against indiscriminate use of his picture sand images of political leaders in posters and placards calling it a "bad culture" which should be denounced by the Jatiya Sangsad as well.
"I feel good watching my picture as all people do so (and) for the reason, we preserve those images in albums. The Election Commission has hung my picture in the building; there is no problem of it," the President said while inaugurating the newly constructed EC building at Agargaon in the city.
He added: "But as I was coming through the street here, I saw my pictures also on the street . . . I didn't feel good,"
The president said he did not feel good seeing "this new culture of using pictures" of top political leaders particularly demanding release of people whoever were arrested for whatever reason.
"Pictures are here and there on the streets. I went to jail three times during the Pakistan regime and stayed there for one year and a month. But there was no poster. But now we see posters the day after an individual is arrested by police," President Hamid said.
He went on saying, "How beautiful those pictures are! . . . Those pictures are like heroes and heroines. Even if someone goes to jail in a mugging case, we see his picture on the posters demanding his release. This culture has taken a serious turn."
Many leaders and activists use big picture in the poster but use a small picture of the party's leaders in any corner of the poster, he observed.
He observed that the main target is to introduce someone in public arena for election purposes.
"But what actually could achieve through this type of introduction?" the president said.
The president also drew Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Choudhury's attention to the phenomenon as she was present at the function saying "she could discuss the issue in parliament. We should come out from this culture."
But, he said, the EC should play and "uncompromising role in this regard" as "we need to introduce such a system where no picture will be allowed".
