DHAKA, Jan 25, 2017 (BSS) - President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today wished a success of International Customs Day, to be observed in Bangladesh tomorrow as elsewhere around the globe.
In separate messages on the eve of the day, they greeted all officials and employees of the customs department and the tax-paying individuals and companies.
In his message, the President said the Bangladesh customs is playing an important role in foreign trade like import and export.
He said the Bangladesh customs is relentlessly working for curbing smuggling, and protecting environment and public health side by side with trade and tariff liberalization and trade facilitation for expanding foreign trade and investment.
Abdul Hamid said the theme of this year's International Customs Day is 'Data Analysis for Effective Border Management', describing it as time-befitting in the Bangladesh perspective.
The President expressed his satisfaction over the implementation of multifarious programmes of digitization, including national single window, to bring modernism into customs activities.
He said there is no alternative to automation of customs activities to help the department cope with the competition of globalization.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said the government is implementing various programmes to modernize revenue collection activities and bring dynamism into its procedure.
She said the customs department would play an important role for expanding trade, investment and revenue collection and combating smuggling to turn Bangladesh into a middle income country by 2021 and developed country by 2041.
Sheikh Hasina said the government has increased manpower in the customs administration and the domestic revenue collection increased manifold because of applying of information technology and modern customs management system.
She hoped that the customs administration would be more active to bring dynamism into revenue collection, prevent terrorism and militancy and ensure transparency and accountability.
