DHAKA, Dec 21, 2016 (BSS) - President Abdul Hamid today held talks separately with leaders of Krishak Sramik Janata League (KSJL) and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) as part of his move to take opinion of registered political parties for formation of a new Election Commission (EC).
During the meeting with a 14-member KSJL delegation led by its president Quader Siddiqui at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban, the President said that talks with political parties would help constitute a strong EC, according to a Bangabhaban spokesperson.
During the hour-long meeting, KSJL chief Quader Siddiqui said that by initiating talks with political parties, the President has played a proper role as guardian of the state which is epoch-making, President's Press Secretary Joynal Abedin told BSS.
He hoped that the President will form a neutral and strong EC and emphasized the need for woman representation in the new commission.
During the 30-minute meeting with LDP, President Hamid said opinion of political parties will play an important role in forming a strong EC.
LDP president Oli Ahmed said the whole nation is eagerly waiting for a strong EC.
"It's possible to solve the problem through discussion which sometimes is not possible through enactment of a law," Joynal Abedin quoted the LDP president as saying.
Oli Ahmed, also a former minister, presented the party's opinion about the process of forming a search committee.
He said that his party would extend cooperation in forming the new EC.
Secretaries concerned to the President Office were present.
President Hamid initiated the talks with political parties on the EC formation with holding discussions with BNP on Sunday. He took the dialogue initiative as the tenure of the current Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad-led EC expires in February next.
