DHAKA, Dec 19, 2016 (BSS) - President Abdul Hamid today underscored the need for putting joint efforts to ensure quality of education so that the students can properly face local and international competition.
"We've to keep in mind that passing in examinations does not mean that students have acquired quality education...this two are not the same. The main purpose of education is to flourish talent of students," he said while addressing the 5th convocation of Bangladesh Open University (BOU) on its campus at Gazipur.
"So, we've to give importance to quality education apart from increasing the number of graduates. We have to ensure together so that our students can survive with their quality in both local and international competition," he added.
A total of 5,010 students received degrees at the convocation.
The President said the purpose of higher education is not only to pursue a degree and good earnings in work-life rather to become an ideal human being where qualities including ethics and patriotism will be reflected.
"We've to build our universities as center of practicing knowledge without limiting their activities to book-based knowledge. I believe the country's universities will turn their institutes into a complete centre of practicing knowledge and research remaining accountable to the country and the nation," he said.
In today's world Open and Distance Learning have unveiled new horizon in acquiring knowledge, said the President, adding that the Open Education became accepted across the world using various system and technology to teach students.
"Education has beginning, but it has no end. It can be acquired throughout the life. Bangladesh Open University has initiated a new chapter in the education system by providing scope to the students, who were deprived from education for various reasons and don't have scope to study in the conventional system," the President added.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, University Grants Commission (UGC)chairman Prof Abdul Mannan and BOU vice-chancellor Prof MA Mannan spoke on the occasion.
President and Chief Executive Officer of the Commonwealth of Learning Professor Asha Kanwar was present as the convocation speaker.
