Police arrest IT chief of ABT in city

DHAKA- Police arrested the alleged chief of information technology (IT) wing of banned militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) from Norda area under Bhatara Police Station in the city.

The arrestee, Ashfaq-ur Rahman alias Oyon alias Arif alias Anik, was picked up by Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police at 7.15 pm yesterday (Monday).

"He was a close associate of sacked army Major Zia and the IT chief of that group. Ashfaq used to hack the social networking accounts of different bloggers targeted by ABT and collect information about them. He used to help to zero in on their target," a DMP release said.

Police recovered a laptop, one mobile phone set, articles written by Al Qaida founder Usama Bin Laden and its former leader Anwar Al Awlaki, training manual on blogger killing from Ashfaq's possession.

Police said the accused confessed in the primary interrogation that he joined ABT in 2014 when he was a student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology.

"He subsequently joined the military wing of ABT in 2015 and took part in trainings conducted by Zia on killing atheist bloggers. Ashfaq used to translate different radically inciting articles and circulate those on different media," the release added.

Ashfaq regularly uploaded contents on web pages run by ABT under the direct supervision of Major Zia.
