Ittefaq Group of Publications Limited has handed over a cheque of Taka 4 crore to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as donation for Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust, a fund developed under her initiative.
"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina received the cheque for the Trust from the Ittefaq Group authorities at her official Ganabhaban residence on Sunday evening," PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said today.
He said the trust has been set up at the initiative of the premier for journalists' welfare while it was launched with seed money of Taka 5 crore provided by Sheikh Hasina herself.
The government regularly provides financial assistance to insolvent journalists across the country from the Trust.
On several occasions, the premier called upon the owners of media outlets and well-off people to extend their hands for the trust while the Ittefaq group was the latest such entity to ensure their stake in the process.
Earlier on October 25, private Maasranga Television donated Taka 3 crore to the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust when the TV channel's managing director Anjan Chowdhury Pintu handed over the check to the premier.
