A 22-year-old nurse allegedly ended her life at her home in Dhaka’s Mirpur area on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Joliet Mondol, wife of Nixon Talukder of Ramshil village in Gopalganj’s Kotalipara upazila. Her family members alleged she was killed by her husband and his family members.

Hosne Ara, a sub-inspector at the Mirpur police station, said Joliet hanged herself from the ceiling of her house with a scarf on Wednesday morning.

Her husband’s family members first rushed her to Heart Foundation hospital in Mirpur. Later, she was taken to Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival, she added.

Police said the body was initially kept at the morgue of Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital but was later sent to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital morgue for an autopsy in the wake of a complaint from the woman’s parents.

According to her father Subal Mandal, Joliet tied the knot with Nixon, an IT professional, two years ago and had since been living with her husband’s family in the Paikpara area of Mirpur’s Ahmednagar.

Subal claimed that her daughter was killed by her husband and his family members. “It was not a suicide but a murder,” he claimed.

“However, the exact cause of her death will be ascertained only after a probe and the autopsy,” SI Hosne said.
