Northwestern region celebrates Victory Day-16 amid fanfare

RAJSHAHI/RANGPUR, Dec 16, 2016 (BSS) - The northwestern region today celebrated the Victory Day-2016 amid fanfare with districts under Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions staging various events to pay homage to the 1971 Liberation War martyrs and veterans and recall the history of Bangladesh's emergence.

A 31-gun salute stages in police lines in the region heralded the day while political, social, cultural, professional and trade organisations and educational institutions placed wreaths at Shaheed Minars to pay tributes to the 1971 heroes.

District administrations organized colorful march-pasts at stadiums with participation of police, ansar-VDP, fire service, BNCC, scouts, girls guide, school, college and madrasa students and members of different orphanage, safe home and cultural organizations.

The programmes also included hoisting of the national flag atop public and private buildings, illumination and decoration of road islands, roadsides and educational institutions.

Screening of documentaries on life and contributions of Bangabandhu, Liberation War and successes of the present government, friendly football matches, sports competitions and cultural functions were other programmes to feature the celebrations.

Special prayers were offered at mosques, temples, churches, pagodas and other places of worship. Improved diets are being served at hospitals, jails, orphanages and vagabond centers on the occasion.

Acting mayor of Rajshahi Nizam-Ul Azim placed floral wreaths at Bhuban Mohan Park Shaheed Minar while hundreds others representing different organisaitons and groups followed him. Wreaths were offered also at Shaheed Minars at Rajshahi College, Talaimari, Rajshahi University, Police Line and Collectorate Building in the divisional headquarters.

Commissioner of Rajshahi division, Abdul Hannan accompanied by DIG of Police of Rajshahi Range Khurshid Hossain, RMP Commissioner Shafiqul Islam and Deputy Commissioner Kazi Ashraf Uddin hoisted national flag at the ceremony and took salute of the march-past as the chief guest.

Rajshahi University, Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology, Rajshahi Medical College and Rajshahi Education Board chalked out elaborate programmes to celebrate the Victory Day.

Marking the celebration, recreational and amusement parks and other visiting places remained open for the visitors throughout the day.

The Rangpur city wore a festive look as thousands of the cheering people thronged the Central Shaheed Minar since the zero to place wreaths.

Mayor of Rangpur Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu, Divisional Commissioner Kazi Hasan Ahmed, DIG Khondker Golam Faruk, Acting President of district AL Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner Rahat Anwar and Police Super Mizanur Rahman first placed wreaths.

Later, leaders of Awami League, its associate bodies and other political parties, Sector Commanders Forum, Sommilito Sangskritik Jyote, District Corruption Prevention Committee, heads of different educational institutions and other organisations placed wreaths. The Divisional Commissioner hoisted national flag and took salute at march-pasts and displays by freedom fighters, police, Ansar-VDP, BNCC, boys scout, girls guide, jail guards, fire service personnel, children and students at Rangpur Stadium.

The District Information Office screened documentary films on the War of Liberation and Victory Day.

The district administration accorded receptions to the veteran freedom fighters and relatives of the martyred freedom fighters.

Drawing competition for children, shooting competition, and special sports competition for women, essay competition and charity football matches were arranged at different venues in the city.

Improved diets were served to inmates of the hospitals, jail, shishu paribars, vagabond centres, orphanages and shelter homes of the elderly people.

Special prayers were offered at the places of religious worships seeking divine peace for the departed souls of the martyred sons and daughters of the soil during the War of Liberation, progress and welfare of the nation and its people.

'Swasswato Bangla Muktijuddha Jadughar' under the management of Rangpur Area Headquarters of Bangladesh Army organised the Victory Celebration Programmes on the War of Liberation in the city.

Rangpur Cantonment organised a nine-day Victory Fair- 2016 since December 8 last at 'Proyas' Entertainment Park portraying the heroic acts of the Bengali nation and history of the War of Liberation.
