Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam today said no other democratic country has example of constituting as strong Election Commission as Bangladesh.
"In 2012, late President Zillur Rahman had formed a search committee taking consents of all political party after discussion. As per the recommendation of the search committee, this election commission has been constituted," he told newsmen emerging from a view-exchange with party leaders and workers at his own residence on PTI Road here this afternoon.
The Awami League leader said formation of election commission in such a transparent process is unprecedented in Bangladesh and any other democratic country as well.
His comments came against the backdrop of US Ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat's call for an independent, strong and impartial election commission.
Criticizing the US envoy's remark about the formation of EC, Hanif said they (US ambassador) can talk about the country's development cooperation but the constitution of Election Commission is an internal matter of Bangladesh.
"BNP wants to create a controversy over the election system and the Election Commission under an orchestrated plot. So, no Election Commission will be acceptable to them. Only if 'Aziz type' commission is formed, it will be acceptable to them," the Awami League joint general secretary said.
District Awami League President Sadar Uddin Khan, Senior Vice-President Haji Robiul Islam, General Secretary Azgar Ali and Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ibadat Hossain, among others, were present on the occasion.
Later, he distributed cheques among the destitute persons with major diseases.
