Next general election to be acceptable to all: CEC

CHITTAGONG, Mar 14, 2017 (BSS)- Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda yesterday expressed the hope that the next general election will be held with participation of all political parties as the Election Commission (EC) is working for holding an impartial acceptable election to all.

He said the EC is working relentlessly for creating a congenial environment where the voters can be able to cast their votes without any fear and return home safely after casting votes.

"After assuming EC office, we have conducted polls in fair and free manners and we hope that the coming elections would also be held in the same manner", the CEC hoped.

CEC KM Nurul Huda said this while talking to journalists after attending the inaugural ceremony of Smart National Identity Cards (NID) distribution at Chittagong Circuit house this afternoon.

The CEC also told the journalists that the EC would hold dialogues with different political parties before the next parliament election.

"We will discuss the appointment of returning officers, presiding officers and assistant presiding officers with the parties and we will welcome their suggestions regarding this matter", the CEC asserted.

In a query by the journalists, Huda said the EC, if feels necessary, will deploy army in the upcoming Comilla City Corporation election.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest, the CEC also informed that a total of 10 crore 17 lakhs smart NID cards would be distributed gradually.

Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Samshul Arefin presided over the function while election commissioner Brigadier General (Retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury, Chittagong mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, EC secretary Mohammad Abdullah, Director General of NID Wing Brigadier General Saidul Islam and deputy director Abdul Baten, among others, addressed it.
