NCC polls begins in festive mood

NARAYANGANJ, Dec 22, 2016 (BSS) -Elections to the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) began this morning amid tight security measures and in a festive mood.

Voting started at 8am and will continue till 4pm without any break.

Talking to BSS, Election Commissioner Mohammad Shahnewaz said the NCC poll is being held with party symbols, where a total of 4, 74,931 voters will elect their mayor and 36 councillors in the city's 27 wards.

A total of 195 candidates are contesting for 37 posts. Of them, seven contenders are for the mayoral post and 156 for the posts of councillors while 38 are vying for nine women reserved seats of councillors.

Of the voters, 2, 41, 514 males and 2, 37,878 females are expected to franchise their voting rights at 1304 booths under 174 poling centers. Of those voting centres, the Election Commission has marked 137 as "risky".

A total of seven candidates including - Selina Hayat Ivy of Awami League and Shakhawat Hossain Khan of BNP are contesting for the mayoral post.

Meanwhile, all necessary security arrangement has been ensured to hold the election in a free, fair and credible manner.

Director of EC Secretariat SM Asaduzzaman said the commission has deployed 22 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in the electoral area as an assisting force for a smooth holding of today's polls. Simultaneously 27 executive magistrates will be on special duties during the election to prevent violation of electoral laws.

Four thousand police personnel, 600 members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), three platoons of coastguard and members of Armed Police Battalion (APBn)and Ansar will keep their vigil in and around the voting centers.

One hundred and seventy four presiding officers, 1,304 assistant presiding officers and 2,608 poling officers are performing their duties.

In the first mayoral

election of NCC on 30 October, 2011, Ivy was elected mayor of the city corporation.
