National Income Tax Day observed in Rajshahi

Speakers at a post-rally discussion here on Wednesday said emphasis should be given on creating more mass-awareness for boosting tax collection in the greater interest of making the country economically self-reliance.

They also said transparency and accountability should be ensured in the tax collection system so that more people are encouraged towards tax payment together with increasing the volume of tax collection.

They were addressing the discussion held here to mark the National Income Tax Day- 2016. Tax Zone of Rajshahi hosted the ceremony where large number of taxpayers, businessmen and others concerned from five districts of the region attended.

Ayen Uddin, MP, addressed the discussion as chief guest with Dabir Uddin, Commissioner of Taxes, in the chair.

Tax Appellate Commissioner Sunil Kumar Shaha, Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Shafiqul Islam, DIG of Police of Rajshahi range Kurshid Hossain, Commissioner of Customs, Excise and VAT Moazzem Hossain and President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Md Muniruzzaman spoke as special guests.

Lawmaker Ayen Uddin viewed that the enhanced tax collection from the internal resources could be the effective means of reducing the dependence on foreign aid for executing the uplift programs.

He attributed that the number of taxpayers are being increased gradually with addition of new more uncourageous taxpayers, which is good sign for the nation.

He underscored the need for making more people habituated towards tax payment as the present government is intended to execute the development programs with the internal resources.

Commissioner of Taxes Dabir Uddin told the meeting the Tax Zone has realized income taxes of Taka 411 crore from around 1.42 taxpayers in last 2015-16 fiscal, up by Taka 21 crore than the previous 2014-15 fiscal.

"The target has been surpassed due to continuous efforts to enhance the number of taxpayers," he said adding that the rate of income tax earning has been growing day by day in the wake of bringing simplicity in the tax realization system together with building cordial relation between the tax officials and taxpayers.

"We have set a target to realize taxes of Taka 540 crore in the current 2016-17 fiscal and we are hopeful about attaining the target by end of the fiscal," expected Dabir Uddin.

Around 1800 new more taxpayers will be identified in survey during the current fiscal. To expand the tax network, various motivational campaigns like tax fair, survey and rewards for the taxpayers have been introduced.
