Mosharrad lauds AARDO contribution to poverty alleviation in Afro- Asian region

DHAKA, Jan 19, 2017 (BSS) -LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain today said AARDO is one of the earliest examples of South-South cooperation in rural development of Africa and Asia as it has been playing important role to poverty alleviation in the region.

"AARDO is such a platform for the African and Asian countries to share with, disseminate to and learn from each other the good practices in the field of agricultural and rural development," he said.

The minister was addressing the inaugural function of 68th session of executive committee of AARDO (African-Asian Rural Development Organization) at the city's Hotel Westin in Gulshan.

Rural Development Academy (RDA), Bogra is hosting the three-day event under the supervision of Rural Development and Cooperative Division of the Ministry of LGRD and Cooperatives.

A total of 35 delegates from 14 countries and different organisations were participating in the meeting.

Mosharraf said AARDO is devoted to develop understanding among the members for better appreciation of each other's problems and to explore, collectively, opportunities for coordination of efforts for promoting welfare and eradication of thirst, hunger, illiteracy, disease and poverty amongst rural people.

He expressed his hope that the meeting will be able to guide its member countries how they should work on rural development considering both present and future challenges like climate change impacts.

Mosharraf said after the independence of Bangladesh, the government of the new born country led by the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman focused on rural development as he established Rural Development Academy (RDA), Bogra, comparatively economically backward north-western region of the country in 1974.

He said since its inception, RDA, Bogra has developed and trialed many green innovations and models in Bangladesh context in the field of agricultural and rural development.

"Incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina felt that, for eradicating poverty and generating new employment in rural Bangladesh, each and every rural house should a farmhouse," he said adding that 'Ekti Bari Ekti Khamar (One House One Farm) Project is such an example under my ministry.

He said Bangladesh is always so keen to ratify any favorable international and regional conventions and agreements in rural development.

"As a member Bangladesh will get various cooperation from AARDO in poverty reduction and rural development," he also hoped.

Addressing on the occasion as special guest State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Md Mashiur Rahman Ranga said AARDO is a unique organisation working in the field of rural development in Africa and Asia.

"The governments of the AARDO member countries also aim to remove poverty and hunger by different initiatives for the rural poor," he said.

Rural Development Cooperatives Secretary Dr Prosanta Kumar Roy, President of Executive Committee of AARDO Oomaduth Jadoo, Secretary General of AARDO Engineer Wassfi Hassan El-Sreihin and Director General (In-Charge), RDA, Bogra Engineer MA Matin also addressed on the occasion.

An MOU for conducting an international training course at RDA, Bogra on "Green Innovations in Agriculture for Rural Development" has signed between AARDO and RDCD, Ministry of LGRD and Cooperatives.

Mosharraf also inaugurated a rural technology exhibition organised by Rural Development and Co-operative Division where the Ministry and its organization displaying their innovations, models and technologies for sharing the ideas and views with AARDO member countries.
