Expressing deep concern over the barbaric flogging and stoning of a wife of an expatriate in Barajum village of Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj district, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) has demanded the proper implementation of the Supreme Court verdict to stop extrajudicial punishment to this end.

The leaders of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) expressed their concern over this issue in a written statement today.

According to the statement, on April 4 last, a woman was given 82 lashes alongside pelting 80 stones on charges of allegedly having extra-marital affairs in an arbitration arranged at that village.

Later, the victim could not bear the torture and fell on the ground, the statement read.

In that arbitration, the 'Matbars' (leaders of the village's arbitration) sentenced that woman the house-arrest for a month.

In this incident, the woman filed a case with Chunarughat police station.

Mahila Parishad also requested proper implementation of Bangladesh Supreme Court ruling to stop illegal arbitration, fatwa and extrajudicial punishment.

The leaders demanded exemplary punishment subject to a fair and impartial investigation of the incident.

They demanded good treatment and safety of the woman-victim and her family members alongside raising a nationwide social resistance to prevent such incidents.
