Khaleda wants to create smokescreens over EC reconstitution: Nasim

Awami League Presidium Member and Health Minister Mohammad Nasim today said BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia wants to create smokescreens in the name of discussions on reconstitution of Election Commission.

"She (Khaleda) has given this type of proposal (for discussion) to muddle the situation," he said speaking at a press conference after a meeting of 14-party alliance at AL President's Dhanmondi office in the city.

Mohammad Nasim, also spokesman of 14-party alliance, said the President will invite all registered political parties, and following discussions with them, he will form a 'search committee' to form the EC.

AL Presidium Member Dr. Abdur Razzak, Samyabadi Dal General Secretary Dilip Barua, Workers Party General Secretary Fazle Hossain Badsha, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (faction) General Secretary Shirin Aktar, Tarikat Federation Chairman Nazibul Bashar Maizbhandari, Communist Kendra President Dr. Wazedul Islam Khan, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (faction) General Secretary Nazmul Huq Prodhan, AL leaders AKM Enamul Huq Shamim, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Dr. Abdus Sobhan Golap, Advocate Afzal Hossain and Delowar Hossain attended the meeting, among others.

Mohammaed Nasim said Begum Zia has tried to create smokescreens by irrelevantly prosing deployment of army with magistracy power during polls.

The BNP has made such a proposal to make the army controversial. The EC will decide whom they will deploy during the election, he opined.

"Those who are afraid of the people, try to grab power in a different way," he said.

The 14-party spokesman said elections would be held as per the Constitution and they will accept the verdict of the people.

Referring to attacks on minorities in Nasirnagar and Gaibandha, he said the 14-party leaders have visited the areas and talked to affected people.

A particular quarter has staged the incidents in a planned way to destroy communal harmony, he added.

About Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) polls, Mohammad Nasim said the 14-party alliance decided to work for victory of Selina Hayat Ivy.
