A Juba League leader and his five accomplices have been arrested with 12 machetes on charge of extorting from a contractor.
Police arrested Juba League leader Syed Hadisur Rahman Milon from his Dakterpotti residence and the others from various locations around Jhalakathi town in a drive that lasted into the early hours of Wednesday.
Apart from Milon, the detainees are President of Jhalakathi Government College Chhatra League Tariqul Islam Apu, and Juba League activists Saiful Islam, Mamun Khan, Mamunur Rashid and Polash Das.
Police informed that Juba League leader Hadisur Rahman Milon was obstructing Kalam Hossain, of village Bikna under Sadar upazila, in his contractor work at different times. Milon demanded Tk 50,000 per month as extortion fee from Kalam, if he wanted to continue working in the area.
On January 5, Milon and his men attacked Kalam Hossain in front of the Jhalakathi LGED office and snatched Tk 50,000.
Kalam filed the case against seven people including Milon.
