Dhaka: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman today pledged to show ‘zero’ tolerance against corruption, highlighting the party’s commitment to clean governance based on its past performance in state administration. Dr Shafiqur emphasized that former leaders of the party had demonstrated their honesty and expertise while leading ministries, resulting in efficient and effective governance.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Shafiqur Rahman made these remarks during the inaugural address at the ‘Policy Summit 2026’ held at the Ballroom of Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka. He discussed Bangladesh’s current challenges, noting that while the economy has grown, the quality of work and livelihoods has declined. He pointed out that unemployment and inflation are major issues, with most employment being informal and insecure, and that young graduates and women face significant obstacles in the job market.

Dr Shafiqur also highlighted the precarious economic situation for many, stating that mill
ions are just one economic shock away from hardship despite working hard. He emphasized that economic success should be measured by people’s ability to plan their lives confidently, provide for their families, and participate meaningfully in society.

He praised the contributions of Bangladesh’s young workforce and migrant workers, acknowledging their role in stabilizing the economy and connecting the country to the global labor market. Dr Shafiqur also recognized the global Bangladeshi professional community’s potential to support reform efforts and institutional development.

Emphasizing the importance of women’s participation in the economy, he argued that no nation can prosper sustainably while excluding half of its population. He also pointed out Bangladesh’s natural and strategic advantages, which offer opportunities for sustainable growth and regional connectivity.

Dr Shafiqur stressed the need for effective institutions, sound policies, and responsible political choices to translate Bangladesh’s pote
ntial into prosperity. He called for employment to be treated as a public priority and highlighted the importance of good governance and public-private partnerships.

Reflecting on Bangladesh’s political journey, Dr Shafiqur acknowledged the country’s ongoing struggle for political and economic freedom and human dignity. He referred to the July 2024 mass uprising led by youth and the current democratic transition following a period of authoritarian rule.

He paid tribute to the martyrs of the July movement and expressed hope that their sacrifices would not be in vain. With another national election scheduled for February 12, the policy summit aimed to present Jamaat-e-Islami’s vision for a just, equitable, and prosperous Bangladesh.

The summit was attended by diplomats from several countries, international organizations, and distinguished guests, including senior journalists, professionals, and intellectuals. Prominent figures from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its leadership were also present.
