Jaker, Wahab star as Platoon pick up 4th win

Wicketkeeper Jaker Ali grabbed as many as six catches for Dhaka Platoon when they beat Rajshahi Royals by 74 runs to pick up their 4th win of the ongoing Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium here on Monday.

Jaker was fielded as the substitute of the regular wicketkeeper Anamul Haque Bijoy who took rest due to back injury. The 21-year-old wicketkeeper capitalized the chance by grabbing six catches, which is now the record of the most dismissal in an innings. He surpassed Afghan wicketkeeper Mohammad Shahzad's record of five dismissals. Along with Jaker, Pakistani pacer Wahab Riaz also claimed the second five-for the event conceding eight runs in 3.3 overs.

While it was Platoon's fifth win in eight games, Royals endured their second defeat in seven games. With this win, Platoon advanced to number three in the point table.

Replying, Platoon's 174 for five in 20 overs, Royals tumbled for 100 all-out in 16.3 overs. But the start of the innings of the Royals was indicating something else as Liton Das and Afif Hossain scored 39 runs in just 3.1 overs.

But when Wahab came to the attack, they lost Liton, Alok Kapali and Shoaib Malik in the same overs. Royals never recovered from this downfall.

Liton fell for 10 while Afif posted 31 off 23 balls with three fours and two sixes. The onus was on Kapali and Malik to keep the innings afloat. But the veteran batsmen failed to do so.

Apart from Liton and Afif, Ravi Bopara (10) and pace-bowling all-rounder Nahidul Islam (14) reached double-digits but their efforts were not good enough to avoid a big defeat.

After grabbing the top three wickets, Wahab also sent Nahidul and Kamrul Islam back to the dressing room to record second five-for in his T20 career.

While Wahab bagged five, Hasan Mahmud, Luis Reece and Pakistani spinner Shadab Khan took one wicket each.

Earlier, Royals captain, West Indian superstar Andre Russell, won the toss and sent Platoon to bat first. Platoon lost off-form batsman Anamul Haque Bijoy for just 10 runs off nine balls. England batsman Luis Reece came at number three but failed to impress with his bat.

Tamim was confident on the other end of the wicket. Mahedi Hasan, who hit two consecutive fifties earlier, joined Tamim in the wicket, and they added 37 runs in the third wicket stand.

However, Platoon needed to accelerate the innings to put up a challenging total.

Ariful Haque and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza failed to do that. Arif fell only for seven while Mashrafe suffered a duck.

Asif Ali came to bat at number seven to make a stand of 90 runs off 46 balls. Asif hit 55 off 28 balls with four fours and as many sixes while Tamim posted 68 off 52 with for fours and three sixes. Tamim got an easy life when Afif failed to pick up a catch at the deep.

It was Tamim's third fifty in the ongoing BPL. He smashed first fifty against Cumilla Warriors before recording another one against Sylhet Thunder.

Farhad Reza bagged two wickets conceding 44 runs in three overs while Russell and Shoaib Malik took one wicket each.

Platoon will take on Khulna Tigers on January 3 at Sylhet International Stadium while Royals will face off Rangpur Rangers on December 31 (Tuesday) at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in their next respective games.
