Iqbal Sobhan lauded journalist Liakat Ali’s role in journalism

Prime Minister's Media Advisor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury today lauded the role of noted journalist Liaqat Ali in the flourishing of journalism and said he (Liaqat) had always fought for establishing the rights of the journalists and freedom for press.

"Journalist Liakat Ali had dedicated his life for objective journalism and for the development of South-Western region of the country," he told a publication ceremony of a memorial book on Liaqat Ali.

Dainik Purpanchal, a popular Bengali daily in the region, arranged the publication ceremony, marking the first death anniversary of the veteran journalist Liaqat Ali at a city hotel.

The Prime Minister's media advisor called upon the younger journalists to take lesson from the life of the late journalist and applying those in the development of journalism.

Liakat Ali, founder editor of Dainik Purbanchal and former director of BSS board of director, died on November 28 in 2015.

Chaired by the editor of the daily and the director of the BSS Board of Director Begum Ferdousi Ali, the publication ceremony was addressed, among others, by parliament members Talukder Abdul Khaleque, S M Mostofa Rashidi Suja and Mizanur Rahman Mizan, Mayor of Khulna City Corporation(KCC) Moniruzzaman Mony, administrator of Khulna district council Sheikh Harun-ur-Rashid, Khulna divisional commissioner Md. Abdus Samad, Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner Nibash Chandra Majhi, deputy commissioner Nazmul Ahsan, City Unit BNP president Nazrul Islam Manju, Khulna Press Club president S M Nazrul Islam, educationist and poet Abu Bakkar Siddique, professor Anwarul Quadir, Golam Mostofa Syndaini and Sony Muhammad Ali.

Later, the PM's media advisor joined a memorial meeting on veteran freedom fighter Sheikh Abdul Quyum at Liakat Ali auditorium in Khulna Press Club.

Quyaum, also the founder general secretary of Khulna Union of Journalist (KUJ), died on November 16, 2016.

The memorial meeting was presided over by KUJ president S M Zahid Hossain. A doa mehfil was also held after the meeting.
