DHAKA Cumilla Warriors lower order batsman Abu Haider Rony, whose spectacular attack on Liam Plunkett caught Chattogram Challengers by surprise and led his side's two wicket-victory to keep them alive in the Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League (BBPL) claimed that he was ready to face such sort of crunch situation.
Rony came down heavily on Liam Plunkett in the last over when Cumilla required 16 to win the game and the equation was not easier one. It looked further impossible when Cumilla's set batsman Dawid Malan failed to take two runs in the first ball of the last over and lost the strike taking a single.
Hardly anybody could rely on Rony that he could hit big shots to win it for Cumilla. But the young guy got a lucky boundary before he smashed a six over long on region to ease the things. Cumilla later won the game after some drama.
I have the confidence that I would do this. Because I have been working hard on my death over batting in the net for some days, Rony said after the match.
I practiced hard as to how I can win the game for the team from such crunch situation by hitting big shots. And also there was Dawid Malan. That's why the confidence enhanced further.
After Rony brought the equation down to 4 off 2, Malan got out in the fifth ball, trying to take the doubles. It left Cumilla require 3 off the last delivery. After Malan was trapped run-out, Sunzamul almost entered into the ground but the team management called him to return and sent Mujeeb-ur-Rahman, which paid dividends as he struck boundary to win the game.
Since Sunzamul entered the ground and then returned to dressing room without batting, umpires declared him retired hurt. And therefore Cumilla's margin of victory became two wickets instead of three wickets.
However Rony said that this win boosted them to give a shot to seal the play-off berth in the tournament.
This was a very important match for us. In case of a defeat in the match, we could be eliminated from the race. We have now four matches at hand and if we can win three, there will be chance for us. We hope for the best, he concluded.
