DHAKA, March 21, 2017 (BSS) -The High Court (HC) today stayed for six months the enhanced holding tax imposed by Chittagong City Corporation (CCC).
The court also issued a rule asking CCC Mayor, LGRD secretary and chief revenue officer of CCC to explain in four weeks as to why it shall not declare illegal realizing tax unlawfully.
A High Court division bench comprising Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah issued the rule, after holding hearing on a writ petition filed by four including joint convener of Chittagong Taxpayer Protection Committee, Kamal Uddin.
Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua moved the petition for the petitioner, saying only the National Parliament can increase the rate of income tax of the citizens.
"The rule is to realize seven percent of total value of the house as holding tax. But the CCC is realizing 17 percent from the house owners from October last violating the concerned law," Barrister Barua added.
