HC seeks list of illegal encroachers of Kaptai Lake within 30 days

The High Court on Monday asked the authorities concerned to submit a list of illegal occupants of Kaptai Lake in Rangamati, within 30 days.

 

The HC bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Md Shohrowardi passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed, seeking eviction of illegal encroachers from the lake area.

 

The HC also asked the Deputy Commissioner and Police Super of Rangamati to take effective measures so that no one can fill up the lake and construct any establishments after occupying the lands.

 

The court also asked to submit a progress report in this regard within two weeks.

 

The HC also issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the ineffectiveness of the local administration to stop filling up lands and construction of illegal structures should not be declared illegal.

 

It also issued another rule asking the government to explain as to why directives should not be given to evict the encroachers for occupying land illegally.

 

The Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Rangamati Police and 10 others have been made respondent to the rule, which is returnable in four weeks.

 

Senior Advocate Manzill Murshid stood for the petitioner while deputy attorney general Barrister Mainul Hasan represented the state.

 

Advocates Sarwar Ahad Chowdhury and Ripon Baroi filed writ petitions on behalf of the Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh, seeking steps to stop occupying the lake illegally, demarcate the boundary areas of the lake after a proper survey and eviction of the illegal encroachments.
