HC for ending trial of Ershad’s radar graft case by March 31

The High Court today ordered the trial court concerned to conclude the radar graft case against former president HM Ershad by March 31, 2017.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice JBM Hassan passed the order while accepting a plea of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for examining the witnesses, who have not been testified in the case.

ACC filed the petition with the High Court as the lower court on November 8 dismissed its plea to record the depositions of all the witnesses in the case.

The now-defunct Anti-Corruption Bureau on May 4, 1992, lodged the case against the Jatiya Party leader for causing a loss of more than Taka 64 crore to state exchequer by purchasing a substandard radar from the USA on higher price instead of buying a more modern version from France.

Charge sheet was given in the case on October 27, 1994. The lower court has so far examined 12 out of the total 38 witnesses in the trial and started hearing the arguments in the case.

But ACC has filed the plea to examine the rest of the witnesses for the sake of justice.
