HC discharges rule against 3 Indian TV channels

DHAKA, Jan 29, 2017 (BSS) - The High Court today discharged a rule issued earlier against the broadcasting of three Indian television channels Star Jalsa, Star Plus and Zee Bangla, in the country.

"After today's verdict, there is no legal bar in broadcasting these three channels in Bangladesh," said deputy attorney general Motahar Hossain Saju.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice JBM Hassan passed the order after holding hearing on four schedule dates on a rule issued in this regard.

Supreme Court lawyer Syeda Shaheen Ara Laily in August, 2014 filed a writ with the concerned department of the High Court, pleading its directive upon the government to stop broadcasting of these three channels.

Following the plea, the High Court on October 19, 2014, issued the rule asking authorities concerned to explain why the court shall not direct to stop broadcasting of those channels.

Meanwhile, Aklas Uddin Bhuiyan, counsel for the petitioner, said they

will move to the Appellate Division against today's verdict.
