The government will take stern action against those involved in provoking the 'Santal', an ethnic minority community, with a motive to grab the land of Rangpur Sugar Mills at Shahebganj farm area in Gaibandha district.
"The government is pursuing its highest efforts through the law enforcement agencies to find out the instigators behind the incident," Senior Secretary of the Industries Ministry M Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said at a press briefing here today.
He said a so-called "Land Recovery Committee" was formed by a vested quarter also involving a number of members from the Santal community to grab the government land. Besides, this vested group hired outsiders and engaged some Santal members to occupy a part of the land at Shahebganj farm of the mills in Gobindaganj upazila on July 1 and constructed illegal installations, he added.
Bhuiyan said the government recovered the land from the illegal occupants in cooperation with the home ministry, mills authority and local political and ethnic minority leaders. Some people were injured when the land grabbers attacked the police with local weapons such as bows and arrows, he added.
"The members of the law enforcement agencies have shown the highest patience, restraint and professionalism to face the situation as the issue was sensitive," he said.
He said the government would not spare anyone, who would try to grab the land again. The government will take steps to rehabilitate the members of Santal community who have been affected in the incident. It will also extend all assistance to those injured in the incident, he added.
