SUNAMGANJ, April 20, 2017 (BSS) - The government will provide food assistance to the flood-affected people of the haor regions under Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme for the next three months, Disaster Management and Relief Minister said here yesterday.
"The government will provide food aid to the flood-affected haor peoples under VGF programme for the next three months side by side with providing rice at a price of Taka 10 per kg. The assistance will continue in the haor areas until the people would recover," said Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya.
The minister said this while distributing relief goods and exchanging views with the flood affected haor people at Lakkhan Sri Union council under Sunamganj Sadar upazila.
Dr Jaya Sengupta MP, Shahana Rabbani MP, Peer Fazlur Rahman MP, Disaster Management and Relief Secretary M Shah Kamal, Director General (DG) of the Department of Disaster Management M Riaz Ahmed, District Awami League General Secretary Enamul Kabir Emon, Deputy Commissioner of Sunamganj district Sheikh Rafiqul Islam, among others, were present.
Maya said the government will provide corrugated iron sheet to the flood-affected for rebuilding homes. Even the government will give necessary assistance to the affected after assessing the extent of damages in agriculture, fisheries and livestock sectors, he added.
Meanwhile, the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry already has allocated 750 tonnes of rice and Taka 25 lakh cash for the flood affected haor people, said an official release.
District administration said incessant rain along with onrush of upstream water submerged 90 per cent paddy in the haor areas. The extent of damage has been primarily estimated at Taka 2,000 crore in the haor areas.
