Dhaka: Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury announced plans for a new initiative aimed at supporting cultural activists. The government will introduce a special welfare card to provide institutional support and social security coverage for these individuals, as revealed during a cultural programme at the Bangladesh National Museum.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Chowdhury emphasized the government’s commitment to preserving the nation’s archaeological sites, folk heritage, and historical landmarks. He noted that safeguarding cultural heritage is crucial for maintaining the roots of the nation. The minister’s remarks were made during a programme titled ‘Nrityageeti O Probondho Path,’ which celebrated the birth anniversaries of Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Minister Chowdhury highlighted the importance of culture, not just as a source of entertainment, but as the foundation of a nation’s identity, values, and civilization. He praised the contributions of Tagore and Nazrul, whose literature, music, and philosophies have championed the spirit of humanity, equality, and free thinking globally.

The minister also mentioned the government’s ongoing efforts, under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s leadership, to expand cultural activities nationwide and ensure the welfare and dignity of artists and cultural workers. The event featured performances by the dance troupe ‘Nrityanchal,’ led by renowned dancers Shibli Mohammad and Shamim Ara Nipa, as well as essays by academics on Tagore and Nazrul’s literary and humanistic ideals.
