Govt announces rehabilitation scheme for santals

The government has planned to build permanent abode for santals, evicted recently in Gaibandha, in line with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's directives, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said today.

"The government has decided to build houses for the evicted Santals in Gaibandha on a 10-acre of land in Govindaganj (of Gaibandha) as soon as possible," he told newsmen at his office emerging from an inter-ministerial meeting.

Kamal added that the Prime Minister already issued directives to build dwelling houses for Santals saying "every Santal would live in their house as they do not have permanent abode".

He said the Sheikh Hasina instructed the department concerned to take quick steps for rehabilitating sandals under the government's "Ashrayan" project meant for providing accommodation for homeless people across the country.

The minister said the inter-ministerial meeting also chalked up plans for security arrangements for the upcoming Victory Day adding "law enforcement agencies would ensure tight security across the country".

"Cultural organisation could stage programmes on the day but they must inform law enforcement agencies seven days ahead of the Victory Day for security reasons," Khan said.

Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Hoque, Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain and officials concerned joined the meeting.
