DHAKA, Feb 14, 2017 (BSS) - Bangladesh Awami League has nominated its Sundarganj upazila unit general secretary Golam Mostafa Ahmed to contest the Gaibandha-1 by-election slated for March 22.
The nomination was finalized at a meeting of the Awami League Parliamentary Board (ALPB) held at Ganabhaban, the official residence of the Prime Minister, tonight.
ALPB Chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting. "The ALPB unanimously nominated Golam Mostafa Ahmed for contesting the Gaibandha-1 by-poll," an Awami League press release signed by Office Secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap said.
The Election Commission on February 5 declared the schedule of the by-poll of the constituency comprising Sundarganj upazila of the district.
According to the schedule, the last date for filing nominations has been set for February 19, while all the submitted nomination papers would be scrutinised on February 22.
The last date for nomination paper withdrawal has been fixed on March 1.
The Rangpur Divisional Election Officer would act as the Returning Officer for the by- poll of the constituency that has 302,853 eligible voters.
The seat fell vacant following the death of Awami League lawmaker Manjurul Islam Liton on December 31. Liton was shot dead by unidentified miscreants at his village home in Sundarganj upazila in Gaibandha in the evening on December 31.
