Global Covid cases top 609 million

The overall number of global Covid cases has now surged past 609 million amid a rise in new infections in parts of the world.

According to the latest global data, the total case count mounted to 609,431,363 while the death toll reached 6,501,243 on Saturday morning.

The US has recorded 96,572,566 cases so far and 1,072,672 people have died from the virus in the country, both highest counts around the world.

India’s daily Covid-19 caseload Friday decreased to 6,168, officials said.

According to federal health ministry data released on Friday morning, the new cases were reported in 24 hours, taking the total tally to 4,44,42,507 in the country.

The cases reported on Friday marked a fall from the daily caseload of 7,946 on Thursday.

With the fresh cases, India’s active caseload currently stands at 59,210.

The country also logged 21 related deaths in 24 hours, pushing the overall death toll to 527,932 since the beginning of the pandemic, the ministry said.

Covid in Bangladesh

Bangladesh reported one more Covid-linked death and 214 cases in 24 hours till Friday morning, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

With the new numbers, the country’s total fatalities rose to 29,326 and the caseload to 2,012,376, it added.

The daily case test positivity rate rose to 5.68% from Thursday’s 5.46% as 3,768 samples were tested.

The mortality rate remained unchanged at 1.46%. The recovery rate rose to 97.25%.

In August, the country reported 32 Covid-linked deaths and 6,689 cases.

Bangladesh registered its highest daily caseload of 16,230 on July 28 last year and daily fatalities of 264 on August 10 the same year.
