Fund Launched to Boost Disaster Response Capacity in Bangladesh

Dhaka: An NGO-Microfinance Institution (MFI) Resourced Pooled Fund has been launched to make locally-run humanitarian financing and disaster response activities more effective and sustainable in the country. Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir attended the national launching ceremony of the ‘NGO-MFI Resourced Pooled Fund’ as the chief guest at a hotel in the capital on Monday night, said a PID handout on Tuesday.

According to United News of Bangladesh, speaking at the event, the minister emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in ensuring rapid and efficient humanitarian assistance at the local level in the disaster-prone nation. He expressed optimism that this newly established fund would play a crucial role in enhancing the disaster response capacity of the country’s marginalized communities and accelerate emergency assistance programs.

Mirza Fakhrul highlighted that this joint fund, formed by leveraging the experience, capacity, and public involvement of local NGOs and microfinance institutions, would open new avenues in humanitarian aid management. He urged all relevant institutions to work in a coordinated manner to maximize the impact of the fund.

The event was attended by representatives from various international organizations, development partners, NGOs, and microfinance institutions, showcasing a collaborative effort to enhance the nation’s ability to respond to disasters effectively.
