FM for Bangladesh-Bhutan joint development of hydro-power projects

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali today stressed on joint development of hydro-power projects and operationalization of BBIN Motor Vehicle Agreement between Bangladesh and Bhutan under the framework of sub-regional cooperation.

"Bangladesh is willing to invest USD 1 billion in the 1125 MW Dorjilung Hydro-power project under trilateral cooperation with India and Bhutan," he said when the newly appointed Bhutanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Sonam Tobden Rabgye called on him at his office here.

The foreign minister said there is tremendous potential in the region and the prospect of sub-regional 'growth quadrangle' in the form of BBIN (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal) will be able to bring mutual benefits to our people, foreign ministry sources said.

During the meeting, they discussed issues of mutual interest when Ali recalled his diplomatic assignment in Bhutan in the 80s and his recent visit to Bhutan when he was amazed at the tremendous progress and development Bhutan has achieved over the years.

The foreign minister stated his long association with the Bhutanese Royal Family and lauded the pragmatic role of His Majesty the Kings especially the role of 4th King of Bhutan.

The newly appointed Bhutanese envoy conveyed the regards of the Bhutanese Foreign Minister to his Bangladesh counterpart.

The Ambassador expressed thanks for granting a plot in Dhaka for the construction of the embassy and stated that according to the desire of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, they would build a structure commensurate with Bhutanese culture and heritage.

The Ambassador briefed Ali about the developments in Bhutan in various sectors including the hydro-power projects and BBIN Motor Vehicle Agreement and informed about the progress on operationalization of flights between the two countries by US-Bangla airlines.

He also expressed Bhutan's interest to import internet bandwidth from Bangladesh.

Foreign Minister assured the new Ambassador of Bhutan all cooperation in the discharge of his duties during his tenure in Bangladesh.
