The nation today began celebrating in festive mood the Month of Victory, with pledging afresh to protect the country from any conspiracy of the anti-liberation forces as the people did in 1971.
The month-long festivity began with the clock chiming away midnight and the people of all walks of life gathering around the "Eternal Flame" at Suhrawardy Udyan and lighting candles at the historical place where the Pakistan occupation army formally surrendered on December 16 in 1971.
Dhaka University brought out a Victory Rally at 11 am from Aparajeyo Bangla, which ended at the Independence Squire in Suhrawardy Udyan. Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique led the rally, participated by students, teachers, officers and employees and their family-members.
Addressing the rally, Professor Siddique demanded that the diplomatic relation with Pakistan should be cut off besides taking initiative to scrap its SAARC membership.
The Committee for the Implementation of the Freedom Fighters' Day formed a human-chain at the Eternal Flame at 10 in the morning from where the organisation demanded the government that the first day of December should be announced the Freedom Fighters' Day.
Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu addressed the programme where Major General (Rtd) K M Shafiullah administered an oath, refreshing the commitment of the War of Independence.
A special 'doa' was also offered, seeking peace and salvation of the eternal soul of the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the independence of the country.
Muktijuddher Chetana Bastabayan Mancha organised a discussion at National Press Club auditorium in the city where Minister for Liberation War Affairs AKM Mozammel Huq said that December 1, the first day of the month of victory, would be declared as the National Freedom Fighter Day to spread the spirit of the Liberation War among the new generation.
Different socio-political, educational and cultural institutions and organisations also organised various programmes to celebrate the nation's great victory under the leadership of Father of the National Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The programmes included placing of wreaths on the portrait of Bangabandhu at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in capital and organising rallies, discussions, photo exhibition and cultural events.
