GAZIPUR, April 12, 2017 (BSS) - Four family members of Mufti Abdul Hannan, a key militant figure awaiting execution of death penalty anytime now, met the convict at Kashimpur Jail here today.
Mufti Hannan was sentenced to death penalties in a number of cases that include the assassination attempt on former British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Anwar Choudhury during his visit to Hazrat Shahjalal's shrine in Sylhet city on May 21, 2004.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Sunday said there was no legal bar to execute the death penalty on militant leader Mufti Hannan as President Abdul Hamid has rejected his petition for clemency.
Jail authorities confirmed that wife Zakia Parvin Ruma, elder brother Ali Uzzaman Munshi and two daughters- Nishi Khanam and Nazrin Khanam- met Mufti Hannan at the jail, where security has been tightened. They stayed for around half an hour and left the jail gate at around 8.15 this morning.
Senior Jail Super Mohammad Mizanur Rahman told BSS that they have taken all preparations to execute the death penalty as per jail codes and it would be carried out anytime following green signals from the higher authorities.
Gazipur police said they have taken extra measures to ensure tight security and prevent potential threats from Mufti Hannan's followers or from any other groups of home-grown militants. Law enforcers have taken extra vigil at all important points in Gazipur, he added.
