Every district to come under rail network: Mujib

DHAKA, Jan 4 2017 (BSS)- Railway Minister Mujibul Haque has said every district of the country would be brought under rail network as part of the present government's long term plan to make railway as the peoples most preferred transport.

He made this announcement on Tuesday while visiting the construction sites of two important railway bridges being developed at Bhairab and Titas on Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet double rail line now under expansion.

The two bridges are expected to be opened for rail traffic by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina within April this year, the minister said adding, the double rail lines, once completed, would reduce journey time by several hours. The transportation of goods and commodities would also be easier and faster, he added.

The minister also referred to the massive development programmes being run under Sheikh Hasina and said people should not forget the dark past of railway paved by the BNP-Jamaat government. He said BNP-Jamaat government not only shrunk the rail network nationwide but also closed many stations while burnt rail coaches and engines during their so-called political agitation.

Rail Secretary Firoz Salahuddin, Director General of Bangladesh Railway Mohammad Amzad Hossain, and Project Director of Bhairab and Titas Rail Bridges Mohammad Abdul Hye, among others, accompanied the minister.
