Drug court acquits all in toxic paracetamol case

The Drug Court here today acquitted five officials of Rid Pharmaceuticals Ltd, including its Managing Director (MD), in the case of manufacturing substandard paracetamol syrup that reportedly killed some 28 children in 2009.

Lawyers and court officials said Judge M Atoar Rahman of Dhaka Drug Court passed the acquittal order this morning slamming the drug administration authorities for filing the case without producing necessary documents before the court in proper manner.

Five officials of the company are: MD Mizanur Rahman, Directors Sheuli Rahman and Abdul Gani, and two pharmacists -- Mahbubul Islam and Enamul Haque.

Of them, Mizanur Rahman and his wife Sheuli Rahman are now on bail while three others remain still at large, the officials added.

Shafiqul Islam, the then superintendent of drug administration, filed the case against the accused with Dhaka Drug Court on August 10, 2009 after the children's casualties from June to August of the same year caused by taking substandard paracetamol syrup manufactured by the Rid Pharma.

Sources said four more cases were filed against the above mentioned officials in the same year in Brahmanbaria, Comilla, Narayanganj and Sylhet.
