Digital Cineplex, piracy prevention of films demanded

DHAKA, April 4, 2017 (BSS) -Speakers at a seminar here yesterday called for turning the exiting Cineplex into digital one side by side prevention of piracy of films and cutting activities of the middlemen booking agents for the sake of development of film industry.

They were addressing at a seminar styled 'Current screening system is the main barrier to film development in Bangladesh' organized by Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) here marking the Fifth National Films day.

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu attended the function as the chief guest while Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu and Information Secretary Mortuza Ahmed attended as special guests.

Principal Information Officer (PIO) and film expert Dr M Zahangir Hossain presented the keynote paper in the seminar with BFDC managing director Tapon Kumar Gosh in the chair.

Noted film directors Kazi Hayat and Morshedul Islam, Bangladesh Film Director Association president Mushfiqur Rahman Gulzar, Film Producers Interest Protection Committee joint convener Khorshed Alam Khashru, Bangladesh Film Screening Association President Ifthekar Uddin Noshad and RAB wing commander Farhad Hossain took part in the discussion.

Industries minister Amir Hossain Amu said awareness should be created among the people to prevent pirated film screening to restore the lost glory of films as government cannot do it alone.

In the current year, he said, the government has taken 15 Cineplex under central server to stop piracy. "Cinema hall owners and financer should work hand in hand for ensuring digitization in the exiting Cineplex, Amu observed.

In response to the demand of the film industry insiders, the industries minister said the film industry is now a high priority sector in line with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's pledge.

Information minister Hasanul Haq Inu said the government will provide cooperation for solving three problems-digital Cineplex, piracy prevention and stop middlemen booking agents in film industries - identified at the seminar.

"Awareness should be created among film makers and financers to making local film industry sustainable," he said.
