DHAKA, March 28, 2017 (BSS) - Bangladesh will host the 2nd International Conference on Disability and Disaster Risk Management in the first week of December.
The decision was taken at an advisory committee meeting held at the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry's conference room here today, said an official release.
Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the conference.
The meeting has decided on inviting the ministers of different countries to the conference, but the final decision would be taken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"The main goal of the conference is drawing attention of the world to the miseries of the disabled as well as to forge global unity to enhance cooperation to the disabled people", said Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossen Chowdhury Maya who chaired the meeting.
The women and children are usually at risk during a disaster, but the disabled persons suffer the most during the disaster period, he said.
The minister, however, told the meeting that the government will rehabilitate those who have been suffering disabilities due to various disasters.
The meeting formed 11 sub-committees for organizing the conference in the first week of December, as the International Day for the Disabled falls on December 3.
Earlier, Bangladesh organized the first International conference in November 2015, but the Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk (AMCDR) which was held in New Delhi in November 2016 has been declared as the first International Conference on Disability and Disaster Risk Management.
Secretaries, Director General of different departments, representatives of different government and non-government organizations including Disaster Management and Relief Secretary M Shah Kamal, among others, attended the meeting.
